What I Am Reading

I have been reading a lot of different things recently. Really gone on an Amazon.com spending splurge and started sucking down all sorts of disparate things. I have several different books going right now.

The most interesting right now is

Class 11: Inside the CIA’s First Post-9/11 Spy Class
by T.J. Waters

This is an interesting book about the first CIA class after September 11th, 2001 (that’s the day the bad guys flew an airplane into the World Trade Center Towers in New York City). The guy goes into a lot of detail, though there are obvious parts he doesn’t talk about. Not very well written. Kinda clunky prose, but still an interesting look into how this whole “spy” business happens.

SAS Survival Guide Handbook
by John ‘Lofty’ Wiseman

I started watching this TV show called Man vs Wild about this crazy assed guy who puts himself out in the middle of nowhere with only a knife and a handful of jujubees or something, and then has to live off the land for a week. Being the geek I am, I thought I’d like to read about more of these sorts of survival things. So I went out and did some research and bought this book. Supposedly it is the best of the genre. …the genre being “books written for a bunch of white guys living in a fantasy world that they are some sort of super macho hero.” I bet you could find this at a gun show.

Go and tell that lonesome liar

On the CW (the new UPN / WB combo network), after Smallville, they played a commercial for a preview for Supernatural.
In the preview, they played a version of Moby’s Run On that sounds like it was sung by Johnny Cash.

Turns out, it was! And, like many covers, the new version is superior to the original. Not that I disliked the Moby version, but Cash’ is very good.

Decide for yourself. Which do you like more?

This is Moby’s version of that song.

This is the Johnny Cash version:

Lord God Almighty let me tell the news
my head got wet in midnight dew
great God i been down on my bended knees
talking to a man from galilee
michael spoke and he sound so sweet
i thought i heard the shuffle of angels’ feet
He put one hand upon my head
great God Almighty let me tell you what He said

go tell that lonesome liar
go tell that midnight rider  [???]
tell the gamblin’, ramblin’ backslider
tell them God Almighty gonna cut ‘em down

you might run on for a long time
run on, ducking and dodging
run on, children [?], for a long time
let me tell you God Almighty gonna cut you down

you might throw your rock [?], hide your head
work in the dark with your fellow men
sure as God made you rich and poor
you’re gonna reap just what you sow

[chorus] x3

some people go to church just to signify
trying to make a date with a neighbor’s wife
brother let me tell you just as sure as you’re born
you better leave that woman alone

[chorus] x8
